As I had suspected, it couldn't be repaired for a reasonable cost. Dorian discussed options and showed me examples in a catalogue, checked prices and found he could supply a new one within the hour! He and his friend took away the broken one with great care not to damage the walls in a very narrow hall. They were also kind enough to repair the wall catch on a stair gate I'm using to stop my new puppy going for a wander. Oh, and they had lots of top tips for puppy training too!
