And for Selsey businessman Kevin

Chichester Observer

Leading local businessman Kevin Byrne has been selected by the London Organising Commitee of the Olympic and Paraolympic Games to take aprt in the Olympic Torch Relay.

Kevin, MD of Selsey-based has been honoured because of his on-going charity work and inspirational business leadership.

Kevin, 48 will carry the Olympic Flame through Woodgate near Chichester on July 16.

The Flame arrives in the country on May 18, having being lit in Greece and represents peace, unity and friendship.  In all 8,000 torchbearers, chosen for their inspirational personal stories, will carry the Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages on a 70-day journey.

Last year Kevin ran 100 miles over 10 days to raise money for a child with cerebral palsy who needed surgery.  He also works with the Lighthouse Foundation to support orphanages in Nepal, which shelter children falling victim to the sex trade and other forms of abuse.

In 1998 Kevin started which vets and monitors trades and services, helping people to avoid cowboy builders and rogue traders.  It has since become one of the region's most successful firms, with a turnover in excess of £5.5m, 7200 trade members and 150 new members joining each month.

"Being chosen to carry the Olympic Flame is a huge honour," said a delighted Kevin.  "I'd like to thank my colleagues and customers at who have helped make it such a big success.  I am training hard in preparation for my big day in Woodgate and am looking forward to it immensely".

Checkatrade helps combat the UK's rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local traders such as builders, plumbers and electricians. The idea was born in 1998 after a tornado hit the small West Sussex town of Selsey. Traders poured in from as far away as Liverpool and Manchester. Unfortunately, some ripped off the inhabitants of the town. Local businessman, Kevin Byrne, realised there was nowhere to check out the traders’ credentials and the company that became Checkatrade was formed.

Since then, Checkatrade has grown to include over 6,300 genuine trade members, growing by an average 120 new members every month, and, via the Royal Mail, distributes 5.9 million directories a year into communities throughout Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Dorset and Berkshire, while the website includes traders from across the UK.
