3 August 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DO TRADERS GET A RAW DEAL?

Checkatrade Gives Good Guys a Voice.

SUMMARY

On almost a daily basis it seems, the public are bombarded with stories of rogue builders, plumbers, roofers, landscapers and so on. The honest trader in Britain is being smeared unjustly with the same brush as those whose sole aim is to make a fast buck at someone else’s expense. How can an honest tradesperson set themselves apart from these rogues? Checkatrade.com, the place to find a vetted and monitored trader, provides the solution.

PRESS RELEASE

On almost a daily basis it seems, the public are bombarded with stories of rogue builders, plumbers, roofers, landscapers and so on. The honest trader in Britain is being smeared unjustly with the same brush as those whose sole aim is to make a fast buck at someone else’s expense. How can an honest tradesperson set themselves apart from these rogues? Checkatrade.com, the place to find a vetted and monitored trader, provides the solution.

It is very difficult and actually nearby impossible to tell a good trader from a dishonest one when using newspapers or telephone directories to look for a builder, plumber, electrician or computer engineer. Just because they have a large eye-catching advertisement does not mean they are to be trusted. Many people have been caught out this way. Sometimes, it is the company with the small advertisement that is the better one. But they find that the cost of such large ads is prohibitive, especially for small companies with just a few employees.

Consumers are more aware these days of the need to check public liability insurance, references and the previous work that a trader has done and it can be frustrating for traders to carry all the paperwork associated with this with them when they quote for jobs. Checkatrade provides a “one stop shop” where all these details are listed, including up to date reports from genuine customers, eliminating the need to carry such information around. Each trader can download a copy of his details, including references, on a single sheet of paper. Checkatrade checks all identities, public liability insurance details and references before traders are listed as full members.

Each Checkatrade member is given their own “micro-website” within the Checkatrade portal which they can edit and upload photos of their work onto anytime. They are also given access to a Member’s Area, where Checkatrade provides up to date industry information, helpful tips, news and a database of customers who have reported back on a trader’s workmanship.

The mainstay of the “Checkatrade System” is the method by which traders are continuously monitored. When a trader completes a job, he gives the customer a “Customer Feedback Card” which the customer completes with scores for workmanship, tidiness, value for money, reliability, courtesy and the accuracy of the estimate. These cards are then sent to Checkatrade who upload them to the Checkatrade database and publish the feedback on their website. Consumers now also have a facility to submit their feedback online. All of this builds a picture of a trader, giving consumers all the essential information they need when hiring someone to do work.

“Our members are our biggest advertisement” said Kevin Byrne, Founder and CEO, “Their comments say it all!”

Mike Smith, owner of JNK Property Care, Croydon, said, “Checkatrade far outweighs any other form of business introduction.”

Craig Goddard of Fantastic Fascia, in Reading, said “The result is better than any adverts I did. I’ve not been out of work since.”

“Unsolicited comments like these come into our offices every week”, Kevin said. “Over 150 new trades join us every month, many because they have heard about us from fellow traders and seen for themselves how well it works. I have estimated that Checkatrade generates over 300,000 jobs a year with a value of £150million for our members. As we prosper, so Checkatrade members prosper. It is a win-win situation for all concerned. ”

NOTES TO EDITORS

Checkatrade helps combat the UK's rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local traders such as builders, plumbers and electricians. The idea was born in 1998 after a tornado hit the small West Sussex town of Selsey. Traders poured in from as far away as Liverpool and Manchester. Unfortunately, some ripped off the inhabitants of the town. Local businessman, Kevin Byrne, realised there was nowhere to check out the traders’ credentials and the company that became Checkatrade was formed.

Since then, Checkatrade has grown to include over 6,300 genuine trade members, growing by an average 120 new members every month, and, via the Royal Mail, distributes 5.9 million directories a year into communities throughout Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Dorset and Berkshire, while the website includes traders from across the UK.
