Repointing.
"...On the first day that the work was due to start, he and his men arrived three hours late, not a good start. He states in his website "full inhouse operation, including skilled craftsmen and site supervisors". It then transpired that these so called employees were two Romanians. On one occasion when they did not arrive, I phoned Mr Lamont who told me that they were travelling down from London, and the train was delayed. Needless to say, all the time that they were here, they did not put in a full days work, constantly missing, or turning up late and going early. This certainly did not have anything at all to do with the old horse chestnut, complying with Health and Safety guide lines. They were certainly not skilled or craftsmen. ...it is my belief that Mr Lamont has no staff. He just uses casual labour, as and when he needs them. There wwas no supervision apart from the odd visit by Mr Lamont and they left the surroundings of the house in a terrible state. A lot of mortar left behind between the bricks and that was not cut out properly. The pointing work was started by another man and was not of good order either messy and cracking. He was a subcontractor. I had to call Mr Lamont on 1 April...we came to an agreement that the site would be cleaned up and I would give them a second chance.. if they removed the bad pointing and started again. in the next five days, on only two and a half of them did anyone turn up to work. He agreed that someone would work over the bank holiday to get the job completed. ....the site was cleaned but not very well.......Every time noone arrives for work, I have to telephone Mr Lamont...In his letter to me, Mr Lamont subtly accuses me of not liking foreign workers. Romanians are not yet allowed to work here, unless they are self employed. If you have a work permit why would you leave London to travel one and half hours each way for a days labouring work? If I had been the sort of person who would base a complaint on racist lines, I

Response from Rockprotex Ltd:
On the first day the workers started work at 10.30. They started work at lower levels as the scaffold which had been ordered in good time did not arrive until15.05pm. We have informed the complainant both verbally and in writing that the workers who started this job are European Nationals - working within UK law. They are not casual workers for whom we have not vetted or checked their employment status. They all have UK CIS cards (now unique tax reference) to enable us to pay them and deduct the correct amount of tax from them to submit to the Inland Revenue. These workers have worked for us on various contracts in London and the South East. They are reliable, flexible, skilled and hardworking. One of these workers has worked for us for two years previously and is currently working in a supervisory capacity on a 50K contract, for a customer who continues to give us repeat contracts and is confident in our standards. Incidentally, the workers are not Romanians. To satisfy the complainant, we replaced the "foreign workers". We replaced these workers with someone who was prepared to work over the bank holiday weekend to complete the job - he is an associate of some 25 years. We returned on Sunday 1 April regarding a batch of cement that was not up to standard . we agree that this area would not have been passed by us and that it would absolutely have to be redone and we would not allow this area to be passed as our standards regardless of any complaint by any customer. It is unfortunate that the complainant felt the need to monitor work times and start times and break times of our workers. The HSE would not consider their regulations an "old chestnut". However on completion of the work, this customer was happy with our work and offered to pay for the work immediately - prior to invoice. We appreciate his prompt payment of our quote and on receipt of our invoice.
