When choosing a tradesman to carry out building work there are no formal qualifications that are essential to a tradesman carrying out any work. They do however have to ensure that they are adhering to current building regulations with Part L in mind (conservation of fuel and power).
There are many different courses and qualifications that they can choose to undertake to develop their knowledge and work portfolio. These come in many different forms such as on-site assessment and training (OSAT), Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA), NVQ's or Construction Skills competence certificates.
A builder does not need to have these qualifications to carry out any work and not having these qualifications does not in any way mean that they are not experienced in their field but it is advisable to find several different options in your locality and have quotes produced for the work that needs to be carried out. As with any building service, a satisfied portfolio is a good indication of an excellent work history.
