Can you remember when you last had your guttering checked?

If not, now might be a good time to get it sorted. Gutters are your home’s first defence against severe structural damage. Blocked or broken gutters and downpipes caused by clumps of leaves and other debris will make blockages, leaks and water damage inevitable. Gutters that are left to become severely clogged can’t channel water away from your property, resulting in damp walls, staining, decay and soil erosion – and a lot more cost to you than keeping gutters clean in the first place. Replacing existing PVCu guttering/downpipes costs approximately £33 and £24 per metre respectively, so it really is worth keeping on top of gutter maintenance.
We spoke to Checkatrade tradesman Freddie of Fresh Exterior Services, about why it’s crucial to call in a professional gutter cleaner.
It is recommended that gutters are cleaned twice a year; once in January and then again in summer before the bad weather returns. This allows gutters to be checked for debris that has been blown in by high winds and any damage to gutters or their fixings caused by rain or winter snowfall. If the gutters are left longer than this, the weight of debris and standing water build-up can lead to gutters sagging or pulling away from your property.
Cleaning your gutter yourself can seem like a reasonably simple job to take on, but can actually be a hazardous one. Most of us are not used to working at heights and holding onto the ladder while stretching across to scoop muck out of hard-to-reach spaces offer the opportunity to take too great a risk. After all, the last thing you want is to fall off a ladder and hurt yourself.

Recommended, vetted and monitored
A professionally trained gutter cleaner will follow safety protocol when using ladders and will have the skills, experience and regulation personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to carry out the task. For higher properties, they will operate a gutter vacuum which holds a camera at the end to detect all blockages and ensure the gutters are cleaned thoroughly. This offers a safe, simple solution without using ladders. Specialists will also be able to spot any issues and can repair them before they cause problems in the future.
There is no set price when it comes to this task. Every house is different, this is because it depends on how many gutters there are, the height of the gutters and the volume of blockages. However, prices usually range from £30 up to £150 for larger properties.
The key is to keep on top of it. If you have the gutters professionally cleaned twice a year, as recommended, it will always be much cheaper (and safer for you and your home).
