10 ways to make the most of your May Bank Holidays

Sanding a Chair

An extra day is enough to really make your house your home. Here’s 10 ways to make the most of the upcoming May Bank Holidays:

    1. Safety first
Use the long weekend to give your home a full safety check. Test all your alarms – smoke, burglar and carbon monoxide included and check that all the locks on your windows and doors are working correctly.
    2. Blitz your bathroom
Clean your bathroom from top to bottom. Get behind every nook and cranny, why not give your tiles a good scrub and polish and when you’re finished, treat yourself to a big bubble bath in your newly scrubbed tub.
    3. Dress your windows
If you simply want to smarten up your space, change the look of it by dressing your windows. Hang some new curtains or blinds and rearrange your window sill displays or add some fresh flowers.
    4. Picture this
Bring back the lost art of printing pictures and get your own gallery on the walls of your home. Your phone is likely to be full of images from that family gathering and what better way to put that stash of picture frames to good use
    5. Give upcycling a go
There are many pieces of pre-loved furniture just waiting for a new home this Bank Holiday. Scour your local selling sites or visit a good old-fashioned car boot sale to pick up a bargain. You could paint, decorate or restore it to its former glory which will give it a new lease of life and be a sparkly new addition to your home.
    6. Get out in the garden
Spend your extra day off by getting out in the garden. Maybe the shed could do with a sort out, the decking could do with a power wash or you’ve got some pots which need re-planting, the Bank Holiday is the perfect time to give your garden the TLC it deserves.
    7. Scrub the summer furniture
If your patio set has been hiding under a cover for the last few months, it’s time to clear away the cobwebs and get it sparkling in time for summer. Give the table, chairs and sun loungers a good clean, and if we’re blessed with some Bank Holiday sun, you can then enjoy it in style!
    8. Wave goodbye to weeds
One of the best ways to give your front and back garden a spruce up is to have a good weeding session. Pull up the pesky invaders right to the root, and spray down some weed killer to keep them from wandering.
    9. Buy some blooms
Head to your local garden centre and treat yourself to some bright and colourful summer plants, pot plants or seeds to plant. If the weather allows, get out in the garden and plant them – just make sure you keep on top of the watering.
    10. Don’t forget your doors
One of the most forgotten parts of the home is our front and back doors. Make sure you don’t neglect yours by giving the glass, wood or plastic a good dust and clean – and don’t forget to wipe over door numbers, letterboxes and knockers. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could try painting your wooden door a different shade to transform your house.
