Many of us have more time on our hands than ever before. So, now is the perfect time to tackle all of those household maintenance tasks that have been on your “to-do” list for as long as you can remember.
From hanging new picture frames, painting your skirting boards and fixing squeaky floorboards, through to painting your garden fence, upcycling old furniture and enhancing your property’s curb appeal, there are lots of ways to enhance the aesthetics of your home. What’s more, you may be able to complete them with our handy DIY hacks – using items you’ve already got lying around in your garage.
So, rather than wishing your days away, why not use your free time to brighten, improve and transform your home? You’ll not only be putting this spare time to good use; raiding your garage and using items you already have to make improvements can also save you money too.
Here are some simple DIY hacks using what you may already have at home.
Now’s the perfect time to add the ultimate personal touches to your favourite spaces by handing photographs, artwork or other images that brighten your day.
There are lots of helpful tools online to guide you through positioning and hanging your picture frames. All you’ll need is a screwdriver, a hammer, a pencil, a spirit level and, if the frames are heavy, you might need to grab your power drill too.
Many of us have pots of paint lying around our garage or garden shed. Why not dig out your paintbrushes and give all of those areas in your home that need a fresh lick of paint some much needed TLC? Skirting boards are usually top of the list.
It’s a job that many of us put on the back burner but, if you’ve been meaning to fit a new toilet roll holder that’s been hiding away in a drawer, now is a perfect time. Although it’s not the most exciting job, it’s relatively easy to do and you’ll probably have the tools you need lurking in your garage.
To complete this simple yet essential task, all you’ll need is a power drill, a screwdriver, wall plugs, masking tape, screws, a spirit level and a hammer. As with any DIY job, we’d advise wearing safety gloves.
As many of us come to terms with extended periods of time at home, our gardens have become a welcome retreat. And, with so much free time, there really is no excuse for your garden to resemble the wilderness or be in disrepair.
Now is a great time to put those green fingers to work and give your garden or outdoor space some much needed TLC. There are a whole host of jobs you can tackle now to create a lovely outdoor space that you can enjoy now and over the months to come.
From sowing seeds and watching them come to life, through to starting your own vegetable patch, there are plenty of outdoor tasks to keep you busy. Other tasks that are easy to do using things you may already have include cleaning your greenhouse or garden shed, painting your garden fence, cutting your lawn, feeding your plants, repotting your favourite flowers or jet washing your decking.
Squeaky floorboards can be extremely annoying, right? The good news is that fixing squeaky floorboards is relatively easy and inexpensive to do.
Of course, as well as these simple DIY hacks, there are many other tasks that will require the advice of a professional, especially if you don’t feel confident in your ability to fix a problem.
If this is the case, it might be worthwhile holding out and using our Checkatrade Search to find a trusted and vetted tradesperson in your local area.
