When it comes to the installation, repair and maintenance of gas appliances and pipework, it’s crucial that the work is completed by a skilled, experienced and approved engineer.
It has been reported that more than one million homes in the UK are put at risk each year by illegal gas fitters carrying out unsafe work. According to the Gas Safe Register, the UK’s official gas registration body, one in five gas appliances were so dangerous that they needed to be disconnected immediately, including over 186,00 gas cookers, 147,000 boilers, 75,000 gas fires, and 32,000 gas meters.
The Gas Safe Register was established to protect homeowners, tenants and business owners from the potential dangers of unsafe gas work. At Checkatrade we have nearly 5,000 Gas Safe Registered engineers. We constantly check that our paying tradespeople are legally qualified to undertake gas work as part of our ongoing comprehensive vetting and we know this reassures potential customers of the professionalism of our engineers.
What is the Gas Safe Register?
Introduced to protect the public from unsafe gas works, the Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the UK, Isle of Man, and Guernsey. The register is a list of all the businesses and engineers that are legally authorised to install and work on gas appliances. The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI in 2009.
If you want to carry out work on gas appliances and installations, you are legally required to be on the Gas Safe Register.
The body is also responsible for investigating any reports of illegal or unsafe gas work, before passing their findings on to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
How to get Gas Safe Registered
To become Gas Safe Registered, you’ll need to apply to the Gas Safe Register. However, before you apply, you’ll need to ensure that you have all the required qualifications and can prove that you are competent working with gas.
Gas Safe Training
If you’re just starting out in the industry, or you need to update your skills, you might find that you require training before you can demonstrate the qualifications and competence required to get registered. If your qualifications are more than five years old, you will need to retrain.
Make sure that any training is industry recognised and meets all Gas Safe requirements.
Applying for registration
Once you have your qualifications and training in place, you can apply for registration.
You’ll initially receive probationary status, meaning you’ll be classed as fully registered and will be allowed to complete gas work. However, you will need to adhere to certain requirements during this three-month period:
- You must keep records, show examples of completed gas work and inform the register of all finished gas work.
- Make sure you don’t register until you intend to start carrying out gas work – if you are not able to provide evidence of gas work during your probationary period, you will face a suspension.
- Once you have demonstrated that you are competent in gas work, you will move out of probation. That said, if the work you produce is not up to standard, your probationary period may be extended.
Your Gas Safe Registration is valid for 12 months and will need to be renewed each year.
The Gas Safe Register and the law
The law states that all gas engineers in the UK, the Isle of Man and Guernsey must be Gas Safe Registered. All plumbers must also take a Gas Safe course every four years to maintain their Gas Safe certificate. Every time a plumber, gas engineer or heating engineer completes work on any gas appliance, they need to sign off the work before reconnecting the gas supply. This ensures that the work can be traced back to the person that carried out the work.
