WHAT IS DAMP PROOFING & TIMBER DECAY DO I NEED A SURVEY?
Damp Proofing is a method of moisture control that prevents the build-up of damp within floors and walls throughout a residential or commercial property. One of the main causes of property damage throughout the UK is untreated underlying moisture, which can cause a variety of problems such as dry rot, wet rot and penetrating damp. Your home or business could suffer from serious structural damage if there are signs of damp that remain untreated for a length of time … so It is vital to eliminate the problem at the earliest possible stage!.
TIMBER & DAMP SURVEYS/REPORTS
Our approach to damp control and timber preservation starts with a survey undertaken by one of our highly experienced team of surveyors. This allows us to develop an understanding of the underlying cause of any problems we identify and the way the problems sometimes interact. we provide a written report by email setting out our conclusions and recommendations including quotations where appropriate. Subsequent work is supported by an extensive range of guarantees.
Our specialist surveyors are always clicking away on their cameras on timber and damp inspections, see our latest posts on what we come across here: LATEST UPDATES
Source of Rising Damp
Our specialist damp proofing surveyors are called out to many damp related problems including Lateral penetration, Rain penetration, Breached damp proof courses to name a few.
Rising damp enquires always come top of our list as clients will say we’ve been told by contractors we have rising damp, and to be honest when we survey the damp problem it’s not rising damp and is related to other damp sources.
Rising damp can only happen if the building has no damp proof course (DPC) or in some cases where it has been damaged due to renovation work.
Rising damp is a seasonal problem and works with the water table this will cause saturation to the ground soil around the foundations of the building allowing water to rise upwards (capillary action) and work its way into the pores of the brick.
The pores in the brick will determine how high the damp will rise this will usually be a maximum of 2 metres above internal floor level and leaving a tide mark on decorated surfaces,
Unfortunately soluble salts from the soil will rise with the damp and will usually be seen at the apex of the tide mark.
