This eaves cupboard had an infestation of woodworm.  We lifted the floorboards in order to treat the timbers beneath the floor.   It is futile treating the floorboards and not treating the timbers beneath.  If these weaken, the floor will fall thorugh

Our customer had raised his patio and had experienced dampness intenrally.   He had a company out that told him to insert a French Drain and that would solve the problem.  Unfortunately, this had not solved the problem and waterproofing was required internally.   This is completely different to the usual type of damp proofing and a common cause of failure of damp treatments is the inability to distinguish between the different types of treatment. 

DORKING

Our Technician removed the plaster back to the brickwork and inserted a new DPC as a precuationary measure.  A damp proof course only resolves Rising dampness which occurs in areas of wall ABOVE the ground level.    ie its stops moisture rising up the wall.  It does not stop moisture coming through the wall from the outside.  

The wall then had a wateproof plaster applied which included a special mix for areas of the wall that are below the patio levels.  Of course a long term guarantee was issued giving the customer complete peace of mind.

Our Surveyor inspected the wall internaly and externally for dampness.

A metal detector was used to establish the location of the pipes before the plaster was removed so damage was not caused.   The plaster had become contaminated and it was necessary to remove it back to the brickwork.  The whole wall was eventually exposed.

A sand and cement plaster incorporating a good quality wateproofer was applied leaving it ready for the customer to decorate.

The wall plasters have been taken off and the dpc cream injected along the bottom.  You can see the pipework embedded in the wall on the left .  Extra care is always taken to ensure hidden water pipes are not pierced.

a Wateproof plaster has been applied to a height of 1.2m  Plastering above the height of the dpc prevents a salt band occuring in the future.

Where possible, we always insert our dpc internally, however sometimes it is necessary to drill externally and we take extra care to ensure ugly drill holes are kept to a minimum,  Here, you can just about make out the dpc drill holes.

Tidy does it

Our customer called us out due to dampness noted in the walls.  Our inspection showed the timbers, which were in contact with the wet wall, were affected with Wet Rot Fungii.  Unfortunately there was no option but to remove the affected timbers. 

WET ROT 

The customer had no idea there was a problem but the expertise and skill of our qualified surveyor suspected there was a problem.  Swift action was required to ensure the customer didnt fall through the floor and to make absolutely certain there was no Dry Rot under the floor as well.  

Our lad removing the affected timbers.  Another company had identified the rot as Dry Rot.   However our inspection revealed this to be one of the Wet Rots.    Unfortunately the timbers could not be saved as they had lost their integrity and needed to be replaced.     It should be noted that Dry Rot is a much more destructive kind of rot and it is sometimes necessary to remove the wall plasters in the surrounding area in order to halt the progress.   This incurs much more work and expense. 

After Wet Rot Fungii had been identified, we laid new timbers ensuring they were isolated from the wall.

The chemical is injected into the mortar joints at pre-determined  spacing.  Inserting a DPC through an external render or plaster is never successful as its very difficult to establish where the mortar courses are.

Terrible communication, over charged for a service which has left us with continued leaks. Poor quality work- avoid at all costs.

Damp proofing

Very thorough and careful work, excellent attention to detail and the installation of serviceable floor boards so that the treated areas were immediately usable.  Polite and considerate worker.

Really pleased with a neat and tidy job.  The person was on time, really polite and kept us informed about the work he was doing at the end of each day.  He was really tidy as well.  Can fully recommend

To hack away existing damp plaster on an external wall and perform new rendering

Excellent work by plasterer Paul clean and tidy very pleasant man.  Skirting boards and dado rails put back good tidy work by Van very pleased with service.

Rising damp in the house

Overall the main problem Shaw Preservation have is lack of communication with their customers.  Taking current Covid situation into account this remains a huge problem.  Cost of work was, in my opinion, excessive.

Plastering etc.

Excellent all round service from Shaw Preservations who we have used on two occasions.  Very professional yet personable company whose works are to the highest standard.  I would recommend them to anyone who finds themselves in the unfortunate situation of needing remedial damp works done.
