How to choose a reputable contractor?  Where to start?  First port of call is Checkatrade.  So you have already got off to a great start.  Next let’s look at the feedback.  Good feedback is essential for any customers on this site. Was the company on time, efficient, polite?  Does the work look good? Great, this is what we all want from our contractors.

Now let’s dig a bit deeper?  Is the surveyor qualified?  Checkatrade lists all the qualifications of the company not of the individual.

Of course, you wouldn't want your home being inspected by a non-qualified surveyor would you?  Did you know there are a large amount of unqualified “surveyors” carrying out inspections?  Some are very good, but equally some are poor.  As a customer, how can you tell the difference? Which is why we would ALWAYS recommend using a contractor registered with our trade association Property Care Association This is the remedial treatment traders regulatory body.

Being a member of the PCA means technical competence is checked.  Any person can inject a DPC into the wall, but are they injecting the recommended quantities and at the right height and does it actually require a DPC?  As a consumer how do you know?  Is the plaster the correct formulation? (There is a special plaster with a DPC) how do you know this has been carried out correctly?  Yes it looks nice, yes, it is dry now, but will it stand the test of time.

Time and time again, we have customers that have had damp works carried out by a lovely chap who was polite and helpful; wall is dry and he was definitely not a Rogue by any means.  However, 18 months – 3 years down the line the damp is re-appearing.  The contractor that issued the guarantee hasn't gone bust – he has changed his name meaning the piece of paper you have is worthless!!

A useful tip:  Try checking out the company on Companies House. This is a FREE service  here you will find a list of companies registered in the UK.  .  Here you will be able to tell how long a company has been trading, if it has "dissolved" and re-appeared and actually who the directors are.
