Phase 2 - Applying new mortar to external window cills
Jim has completed the second and final phase of our job (see review dated April 2023). He achieved the texture and colour we had hoped for and we are very pleased with the completed cills. He is a very easy tradesperson to work with, involving us in decisions relating to the work. The job was dependent on the right weather. Remodelling of kitchen including creation of new space for Crittal double doors
Would whole heartedly recommend J Matthews Building services. Jim put in a great deal of thought into the project drawing on his many years of experience resulting in a sympathetic build and internal works that preserves the character of our Victorian house. To knock off and re-render all external window cills and other minor brickwork.
Jim is carrying out his work for us in two phases, working round another contractor. Throughout he has been supportive and helpful and given us sound advice on how to go about the work to achieve the best results. Rebuilding a crumbling loose garden wall
It gives us real pleasure to look at the rebuilt wall. Jim is a craftsman with high standards and worked to achieve a finish that was in keeping with the residual 1930’s wall. Repointing house walls
Jim completed 70 sqm of repointing himself. His service from start to finish was exemplary, as was the quality of the completed works. He also efficiently organised the scaffolding. J Matthews Brickwork and Building Services has been established in East Sussex for over 40 years.
I come from a long line of established, Sussex based builders and Bricklayers.
I manly specialize in all aspects of Traditional, Contemporary and Decorative Brickwork, in both cement mortar and lime mortar.
I also specialize in all aspects of re-pointing work carried out in cement and lime mortars.
All re-pointing work, where possible, is cut out using vacuum to minimize dust and unnecessary mess and disturbance.
I am currently focusing on smaller jobs and projects and these include the following :-
- Replacement of defective lintels and perished cavity trays.
- Replacement of spalled and damaged brickwork.
- Repairs and stitching of cracked brickwork.
- Replacement of defective lead flashings.
- Small rendering jobs.
- Brick arch replacement.
I would class myself as a specialist in brick bonds and have years of experience in correcting poorly undertaken brickwork and proper methods of patching in.
I also have many years experience working in coastal conditions and carrying out sympathetic repairs and alterations to older properties.
I have worked for many years as a general builder and the additional works I can undertake include the following :-
- Small alteration works.
- Roof repairs, both tile and slate.
- Lead work..
- Chimney work.
- First fix and second fix carpentry.
- Small plastering jobs.
- Small landscaping projects - paving, paths, walling etc...
