That said, many homeowners now opt to skim over Artex for a smoother finish.

An experienced plasterer can advise on the most suitable option for your home, especially if the existing Artex may contain asbestos.

When was Artex banned in the UK?

Artex itself wasn’t banned, but asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999. Some Artex products made before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos, while newer products do not.

Does Artex contain asbestos?

Some older Artex finishes may contain small amounts of asbestos. You can’t tell just by looking.

The only way to confirm if asbestos is present in the Artex is through an asbestos test. If you’re unsure, it’s important not to disturb it.

Is it illegal to plaster over Artex?

No, it’s not illegal to plaster over Artex. However, if the Artex contains asbestos, it must be properly assessed and managed first.

An experienced plasterer will advise whether sealing or skimming over it is suitable.

Is it worth removing an Artex ceiling?

Whether or not removing an Artex ceiling is worth it depends on:

• The condition of the ceiling
• Whether it contains asbestos
• Your renovation plans (decorating vs major build)

Many homeowners choose to skim over Artex for a smooth finish. Meanwhile, Artex removal may be recommended if the surface is damaged or deteriorating.
