What is composite decking?

Composite decking is a durable, low-maintenance decking material made from a blend of recycled wood fibres and plastic, designed to replicate the look of timber while offering greater resistance to moisture, rot, and fading.

Composite decking is commonly used for:

• Garden decks and patios
• Raised platforms and steps
• Hot tub surrounds
• Outdoor seating and dining areas
• Family-friendly, slip-resistant surfaces

Why choose composite decking for your project

• It won't rot, splinter or warp
• It doesn’t need constant upkeep
• You’ll enjoy a stable colour finish year-round
• It offers a long-lasting, low-maintenance outdoor surface
• It ensures better slip resistance in wet weather

Composite decking is ideal if you want the appearance of wood, but with far less maintenance.

How much does composite decking cost?

For composite decking, expect to pay between £3129 and £7070, with an average cost of £4708.

What affects the cost of composite decking installation?

• Size of the deck (m²)
• Type of boards (capped, uncapped, hollow, solid)
• Board quality, texture and colour
• Subframe material (timber, composite or aluminium)
• Ground preparation and access
• Steps, balustrades, or multi-level layouts
• Added extras such as lighting or privacy screens
• Labour rates in your area

Although composite decking costs more upfront than timber, it often works out cheaper over its lifespan due to minimal maintenance.

Composite decking vs timber decking

Composite decking

• Pros: Low maintenance, rot-resistant, long lifespan, no staining or sealing
• Cons: Higher upfront cost

Timber decking

• Pros: Natural appearance, cheaper initially
• Cons: Requires ongoing staining and sealing, may warp or rot

Composite decking is a strong investment if you want long-term savings and durability.

How long does composite decking installation take?

Most composite decking installations take 1–3 days, depending on deck size, layout complexity, and the amount of preparation required.

How long does composite decking last?

Good-quality composite decking typically lasts 25–30 years, especially capped boards which offer superior fade and stain resistance.

Maintenance for composite decking

• Wash periodically with warm soapy water
• Remove debris from gaps to improve drainage
• Avoid high-pressure washing on strong settings
• Brush away mould or algae with a soft brush
• Follow the board manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations

Remember, composite boards need far less upkeep than traditional timber.

Common mistakes to avoid with composite decking installation

• Incorrect board spacing, leading to expansion issues
• Using wrong fixings or non-compatible screws
• Poor subframe preparation
• Insufficient drainage beneath the deck
• Using harsh chemicals that may damage the board surface

Hiring an experienced composite decking installer helps avoid these issues.
