Question 1

What are the advantages & disadvantages of slate roofing?

Accepted Answer

Slate roofing is commonly used throughout the UK to protect our homes from the elements. This material is so popular due to its great aesthetics and functionality.

So, what are the benefits of choosing a slate roof? Well, you can look forward to:

- Durability - This material is very durable and only requires a small amount of maintenance.

- Reduced energy bills - Slate is a great insulating material, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This means you need less energy to heat your home which will help to reduce your energy bills.

- Choice - Choosing a slate roof gives you the option to choose between several colours and types.

- Curb appeal - Slate roofs are a desirable feature for potential buyers thanks to their beautiful appearance.

- Environmentally friendly - Slate is found naturally throughout the planet making it an environmentally friendly material.

- Fireproof - Slate roofs are great at resisting fire, making your home safer.

### What are the disadvantages of slate roofing?

Slate roofing is a great choice if you want to improve the appearance of your home with a durable material. However, there are a few disadvantages of choosing slate roofing.

These include:

- Cost - While slate has many benefits, it can also be expensive.

- Installation - Not all roof fitters will be qualified to install a slate roof, you may need to hire a slate roofing specialist.

- Weight - Slate roofs tend to be quite heavy which can be an issue for certain homes. You should always check your property is equipped to support a slate roof before going ahead. Luckily, even if your home can't support a slate roof, it can simply be reinforced ahead of installation.

- Strength - While slate roofs are durable, they aren't designed to be walked over. During gutter cleanings, it's important not to stand on a slate roof or the tiles could be damaged.

Question 2

How long does a slate roof last?

Accepted Answer

Slate roofs are both durable and designed to last. When properly maintained, slate roofs can last upwards of 100 years, making them a great investment.

### Is it worth repairing a slate roof?

If your slate roof becomes damaged or worn it’s tempting to get a quick repair, however, this isn’t always the best choice.

If your roof is quite old or very damaged, a replacement is the better choice. Otherwise issues will keep cropping up and you’ll need to pay for repairs again and again.

Question 3

How many slates can a roofer lay in a day?

Accepted Answer

Roofers trained in laying slate tiles work at a steady rate to ensure the job is done to the highest standard. Rushing will only mean the roof is less durable and long lasting.

As a rough guide, a roofer will lay an average of 30 tiles an hour. Depending on how many hours a day they work, this means laying a roof can take days.

Question 4

Is slate roofing expensive?

Accepted Answer

Laying slate roofing often needs to be done by a specialist. This means slate can be more expensive than other roofing materials.

Question 5

How much does a slate roof cost?

Accepted Answer

Laying a slate roof is a difficult task that can take days but once completed, your slate roof could last up to 100 years.

The amount you pay for your slate roof depends on a few key factors. These include:

- Size of roof - The larger your roof, the more tiles and labour time needed. This will increase your slate roof cost.

- Type of slate tiles - Different types of slate tiles can be more or less expensive.

- Number of roofers - The more roofers you hire, the higher the labour cost will be.

- Type of roof - The type of roof you choose will affect the price you pay for slate roofing.

- Access - Roofs that are difficult to access will mean higher labour prices.

### Slate roof cost

Bearing the above variables in mind, you can now estimate your slate roof cost. For example, a standard slate roof will cost an average of **£50 per m2** for materials and **£275 per day** for labour.
