Every garden room will be priced differently so it really depends on your needs and the type of room you choose. When working out your budget, consider the following:

• How large you want the studio to be

• What you’ll use the space for

• What materials you’ll use

• Whether you need to add utilities

• What finishing touches - like flooring and decoration - you’ll add

• Whether you also need to add a path from your home

Does a garden studio add value?

Yes, garden studios can increase the value of your home. If you choose a high quality garden room this will not only attract more buyers but it could add up to 15% extra value to your property.

Adding a garden office is an exciting project and you’ll need to work with a specialised company throughout the process. This means it’s important to find the right tradesperson for the job.

When planning your garden office construction check for companies with the following qualities:

• Friendly and approachable

• Ready to answer your questions

• Happy to explain the process

• Willing to make any essential changes

• Years of experience

• Positive reviews on Checkatrade

• Happy to show you examples of their past work

This comes down to the type and size of garden office you choose. Many garden rooms are built before being delivered to your garden which cuts down on construction times on site. Usually these studios take around a week to build.

Bespoke garden offices will take longer to build (up to a month) as the process is more complex.

Although it’s possible to build a garden studio yourself, this project can be difficult and complex, especially if you have no DIY experience. For a strong, stable, long lasting garden room, we’d recommend hiring a professional.

Alternatively, if you do have experience with construction, you’ll need to follow the below steps to build your garden studio:

1. Prepare the area and add a subbase

2. Construct a timber frame

3. Fit doors

4. Add walls using cladding

5. Cover the roof with waterproof sheeting

6. Treat the cladding

7. Add insulation and plywood to the walls

8. Fit flooring

9. Add utilities if necessary

10. Add any finishing touches

Do I need permission for a garden studio?

While some garden studios do need planning permission, most are considered permitted development. Some examples of when you may need planning permission are:

• If your home is in a conservation area

• If your home is a listed building

• If the garden studio will be particularly large or high
