Why install a roof over your balcony?

A well-installed balcony roof can:

• Protect furniture from rain and wind
• Reduce water damage to doors and walls
• Improve privacy from neighbouring properties
• Make the balcony usable in more weather conditions
• Add practical value to your home

How can I cover a balcony roof?

A balcony roof can be covered using several different options, depending on the level of protection needed:

• Polycarbonate or acrylic panels – Lightweight and affordable
• Fixed glass roofs – Allows natural light while offering weather protection
• Solid flat roof systems (felt or GRP) – Provides full rain protection and durability
• Wood slatted pergola – Stylish and good for shade, but not weatherproof

An experienced installer should be able to recommend a suitable, long-lasting solution that’s right for your balcony, and budget.

What does balcony roofing installation involve?

• Measuring the balcony and checking structural fixings
• Assessing drainage and water runoff
• Selecting suitable roofing materials (weight limits may apply)
• Installing the roof frame and coverings
• Sealing joints and waterproofing all edges
• Final safety and weather checks once fitted
• Planning approval visit (if needed)

Can I build a balcony roof myself?

In most cases, it’s not advised to attempt building a balcony roof yourself:

• Planning permission and approvals may be required
• Incorrect installation can cause leaks and water damage
• Poor drainage may affect the property below
• Structural fixings must be secure and weather-resistant
• Working at height increases safety risks

That’s why most homeowners choose to hire an experienced installer to ensure the balcony roof is safe, weatherproofed, and compliant.
