What is felt roofing?

Felt roofing is a multi-layer flat roofing system made from bitumen felt, fixed and bonded to create a durable, waterproof surface.

It’s commonly installed on sheds, garages, porches, extensions, and other small flat roofs.

Modern felt roofing typically includes:

• A base layer
• A reinforced underlay
• A mineral-finished top layer for UV protection

Signs you may need felt roofing installation or replacement

• Cracks, blisters or splits in your felt roof
• Bald patches where protective minerals have worn away
• Water pooling on the roof surface
• Leaks inside your shed/garage/extension
• Edges lifting or peeling in the wind
• Your roof is older than 10–15 years and has had little maintenance

How much does felt roofing installation cost?

Felt roofing installation costs: Expect to pay between £1067 and £2500, with an average cost of £1625.

What affects the cost of felt roofing installation?

• Roof size (sheds vs garages vs extensions)

• Ventilation or insulation allowances (if relevant)

EPDM rubber roofing

How long does felt roofing installation take?

Most felt roofing installations take 1–2 days, depending on roof size, weather conditions and preparation work.

Shed roofs can often be completed in a few hours.

How long does felt roofing last?

A properly installed felt roof typically lasts 10–20 years, depending on material quality, the number of layers, and ongoing maintenance.

Maintenance for felt roofing

• Clear debris to prevent pooling
• Reseal minor cracks early
• Inspect edges and joints annually
• Remove moss before it spreads

Regular maintenance helps extend the lifespan of your felt roof and prevent leaks.

Common mistakes to avoid with felt roofing installation

• Using only one or two layers instead of three
• Laying felt in wet or cold conditions
• Poor preparation of the roof deck
• Incorrect overlapping of felt layers
• Not sealing edges or flashings properly

Unfortunately, these mistakes often lead to leaks or premature failure.
