What does exterior door installation involve?

Exterior door installation involves fitting a door and frame suitable for outdoor conditions — weatherproof, secure, and insulated — and ensuring it seals properly.

Installers will:

• Prepare the opening
• Fit the door slab and frame
• Set the hardware (locks, hinges, glazing)
• Complete finishing works (weather seals, trims, painting/sealing)

Where structural changes are needed, such as resizing the opening or reinforcing the reveal, the installer will handle or coordinate these tasks as part of the installation.

How much does exterior door installation cost?

Exterior door installation costs vary widely depending on the material, design, complexity, and your location. As a guide:

• New front door installation ranges from around £500–£1,000, depending on the type and specification you choose
• Installing uPVC French and patio door sets could cost around £2,000 per pair
• The average cost of installing a uPVC door is between £400–£1,000
• External door (softwood): £350 per door
• External door (hardwood): £480 per door

Many quotes exclude extras like frame replacement, structural work, trimming, or decorative glazing, so always check what’s included.

Exterior door types & material comparisons

uPVC

• Pros: Low maintenance, good insulation, cost-effective
• Cons: Less premium appearance, limited in bespoke styles

Composite

• Pros: Strong, durable, good aesthetics + insulation
• Cons: Higher cost upfront

Timber

• Pros: Traditional and customisable
• Cons: Requires regular maintenance, can warp or swell

Aluminium/steel

• Pros: Slim profiles, strong
• Cons: More expensive, may need thermal breaks & precise installation

Each material demands different installation techniques. For example, a composite or aluminium door may require more precision and bespoke fitting compared to a standard uPVC door.

Longevity, performance & warranties

A well-installed exterior door should last 20–30+ years, especially if made of durable materials and maintained properly.

Choosing a checked exterior door installer who offers guarantees or warranties (on the door, seals, and workmanship) provides extra peace of mind.
