It's not usually considered necessary, or advisable, to apply a PVA sealer onto a painted wall – if it's been previously painted then it shouldn't need a PVA.

Although you can buy PVA sealer products that are designed to seal porous surfaces, including previously painted walls, we always recommend speaking to local painters and decorators to understand whether that's needed for your walls.

If you're planning to repaint a wall, typically the best approach is to:

  1. Fill any holes with a suitable wall filler product

  2. Rub down the wall with sandpaper

  3. Apply the first coat of fresh paint (you might want to water down the first coat of paint to help it adhere to the wall)

  4. Leave to dry overnight, if possible, then apply a second coat of paint
