Can dry mix concrete be used for a patio sub base?
If you’re laying a new patio, a solid foundation is a must. Although a type 1 sub base (40mm graded to dust aggregate) is more commonly used, you may want to use a dry mix concrete as an alternative sub base. So, does dry mix concrete provide a stable patio foundation? Let’s find out.

Is dry mix concrete suitable for a patio sub base?
The simple answer is yes! As long as it is sufficiently compacted, it will be fine.
When using a dry mix concrete as a patio sub base, it should always be at least 150mm deep. You should also ensure that all topsoil is removed and you are laying the sub base onto solid earth.
What are the problems with using dry mix concrete as a patio sub base?
In most situations, you shouldn’t experience any problems when using dry mix concrete as a patio sub base.
In extremely dry conditions, however, the dry mix might not ‘go off’ properly. This will mean that the foundation will be too soft.
If you’re concerned about this, adding a small amount of water to the mix can help to ensure a more stable foundation.
Can I lay a patio sub base myself?
Yes. A confident DIYer with groundwork experience should be able to successfully lay a patio sub base.
Laying a patio sub base, however, is a physically demanding job. If you’re unsure about your groundwork skills, always hire a professional.
