Do you want to lay a solid wood floor onto a chipboard underlayer? Are you wondering whether this is possible - and if so, whether you should use glue or nails to secure the timber floor in place? Read on to find out the expert opinion on gluing a solid wood floor over chipboard.

Is it possible to glue a solid wood floor over chipboard?

The simple answer is NO! Chipboard is not a suitable material on which to lay a solid wood floor.

Chipboard is not sustainable enough to support a solid wood floor and cannot be used whether you use glue or nails.

PVA glue is also unsuitable for use with chipboard as it would soak into the chipboard causing future problems with your flooring.

How can I attach solid wood floor over chipboard?

To lay a solid wood floor over chipboard, you will need a proper layer of underlay between the solid wood and the chipboard.

Self-adhesive underlay is a good choice and provides a firm yet flexible surface for the solid wood.

You can also use a regular underlay and use a polymer-based adhesive to fix the solid wood floor in place. Both these methods are designed to allow for natural settling and seasonal movement of the solid wood floor.
