The good news is that you won’t generally need planning permission to build a carport – as long as you keep it below a certain size. This is because carports tend to fall within your permitted development rights.

Here’s the maximum size your carport can be to avoid having to seek planning permission.

  • Your carport should cover less than 50% of the land surrounding your property.

  • It should be no more than 4m high.

  • If it’s within 2m of your property’s boundary, its eaves height should be no more than 2.5m.

  • If you live in a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, your carport mustn’t cover more than 10m2.

However, bear in mind that there are exceptions to these rules. For instance, if you live in a listed building, you’ll need to get planning permission before you build a carport.

If you’re not sure whether or not you need planning permission, your best bet is to get in touch with your local council – you can find them on the GOV.UK website.

A company that specialises in building carports will also be able to advise you on whether you’re likely to need planning permission for the structures you’re considering.
