Removing already capped gas fire, can we do it on our own?
Thinking of removing an already capped gas fire and wondering, can we do it on our own? Well, if you're sure that your gas fire has already been capped off safely and securely, then there's no reason why you can't remove the gas fire yourself.
Thinking of removing an already capped gas fire and wondering, can we do it on our own? Well, if you're sure that your gas fire has already been capped off safely and securely, then there's no reason why you can't remove the gas fire yourself.
However, there are a few extra steps that we would always recommend that you take to ensure that your home is safe and meets regulations, once you've removed your gas fire:
Check the cap for leaks – Unless you know exactly when the gas supply to your fire was capped and by who, we would recommend that you have the cap checked for any leaks by a Gas Safe engineer – that way you can be 100% confident that the capping is in excellent condition
Check building regulations – If you have a chimney, it's very likely that you'll need to have an air vent for your fire opening to allow a flow of air that will keep your chimney dry when it's not in use
Dispose of your gas fire responsibly – When disposing of your old gas fire you can do it in a number of ways: use your local household waste collection centre, use a bulky waste collection service, or contact a reputable local scrap merchant
Not sure if your gas fire has been uncapped already? Contact an experienced Gas Safe engineer to inspect your gas fire and gas supply.

How do I uncap my gas fire?
If you have a gas fire that's been previously capped but you want to connect it to the gas supply again, it's time to call a professional.
Gas appliances should only ever be connected or disconnected by a registered Gas Safe engineer – never attempt to connect or disconnect gas appliances yourself.
Hire a local Gas Safe engineer
A Gas Safe engineer will be able to safely and efficiently connect or disconnect the gas supply to your gas fire, carry out important safety checks, and make sure that you and your home are safe.
At Checkatrade, we have many skilled and experienced gas experts in your area. Simply enter your postcode in the box below to find skilled Gas Safe engineers near to you.
