Which trade would be best to revamp my painted 1930's staircase?

I need several layers of old paint stripping off my 1930's staircase. I assume chemicals would be used. I have asthma so would be concerned about this. Anyone got any ideas as to what could be used?

Idris Ayoola, Universal Handyman, Tonbridge

Painter and decorator is your best option, or you could find some who restores old furniture, but I would look for a painter and decorator and ask to see pictures of work they have done.

Aaron Woodfinch, Blastbusters Ltd, Bedford

Possibly Soda blasting as it's environmentally friendly and also good for hygiene surfaces.

Gareth Styles, GJS Roofing and Building Maintenance Ltd, Salisbury

Painter and decorator who restores is your best bet. If you google what you want near you that will bring up the best results but check them out properly.

Peter Rychtowski, Peters Handy Man Services NI, Maghera

For start, if that staircase has original paint on it then is most likely to be full of harmful particle. I advise checking first what chemicals won't go in reaction. Bearing in mind you have asthma this job may be just too dangerous for you to do yourself. All areas need to be sealed off completely, making sure you have that well went. As for paint, you can use two types. Water based or oil base, bearing in mind that for both, the timber needs to be properly primed before painting. Crown trade in my opinion is one of the best timber paints.

Shahid B Ahmed, Sbba Limited, Glasgow

Gas burning can be used.
