Cut and remove the damaged plasterboard halfway to the nearest ceiling joists
Leave the good plasterboard still secure to the joists but with enough room to attach the new piece of plasterboard
If you can't find the joist, use a screwdriver to push through the existing plasterboard to test which way the joists run (between 400-600mm centres)
Remove any nails or screws from the joists
Measure the space, or if the old plasterboard is still in one piece - use this as a template
Cut the new board to fit perfectly into the old board and insert it, making sure to screw it securely in place
Tape all joints and coat with PVA and two coats of plaster finish to feather the join into the existing plasterboard
