If you need to install a new gas pipe or moving an existing one to your home, can you run a gas pipe underground to a property? Keep reading to find out.
The quick answer is, yes. You can run a gas pipe underground to your home. However, engineers will need to bury gas pipes at the right depth to meet the appropriate guidelines.
What are the guidelines for running a gas pipe underground?
In the UK, gas engineers should design and install all gas mains and service pipes according to the Pipelines Safety Regulations 1996 (PSR).
There are also minimum depths that should be adhered to. According to the Health Service Executive UK:
A gas main should be laid at a minimum depth of 750mm if under a road or verge. Or 600mm if under a footpath
A gas service pipe should be laid at a minimum depth of 375mm if under private ground. Or 450mm if under an area of traffic (e.g. footpath, driveway or road)
The above minimum depths are only a guide for gas pipes. You should always consult a qualified Gas Engineer to carry out any work related to gas pipes.
You'll also need to speak to your local gas suppliers so that they are aware of your plans.
