If you lose electricity, you're probably wondering who to call in a power cut. But first, you’ll need to establish whether the issue is just affecting your home or if it’s affecting your neighbours too.

If the whole street has lost power, there’s likely to be a fault in your area. In this case, you’ll need to call your local network company. The number to call is:

  • 105 (England, Wales & Scotland)

  • 03457 643 643 (Northern Ireland)

  • 1800 372 999 (the Republic of Ireland)

However, if the issue is just with your house and you’ve checked that there are no issues with fuses or circuit breakers, you’ll need to call an electrician to help you.

What to do in a power cut

If you find yourself with no electricity in your house, the first thing to do is find out why. Start by following these troubleshooting steps.

1. Check your fuse box

First things first, check your fuse box to see whether one of the switches has tripped. If it has, push it back into the ‘on’ position to turn your power back on.

Hopefully, it’s a one-off incident. However, if it keeps happening, there may be a bigger problem – just get in touch with a local electrician. They’ll be able to identify the issue and find a fix.

2. Check to see if other homes are affected

If there’s no issue with your fuse box, check to see whether your neighbours are also experiencing a power cut.

If you find that your whole street has lost power, it’s probably due to a fault in your area. You’ll need to call your local network company to report the problem.

On the other hand, if it’s just your house that’s lost power, you’ll need an experienced electrician to inspect your home and identify the problem. There could be an issue with loose wiring, an overloaded circuit, or another issue that needs fixing as soon as possible to keep you and your property safe.
