What are the different types of boilers?

As well as having an impact on price, choosing a boiler is the most important consideration you'll need to make.

Not sure where to begin? Our complete guide to new boiler installation will be able to give you more insight into what to look for, ask, and expect.

  • Combi boiler - these do not have a tank, and heat up water as it is required

  • System boiler - these require a hot water storage tank for later use

  • Conventional boiler - this can often be the cheapest option for most homes

  • LPG boiler - these boilers run on LPG rather than electric or gas

  • Biomass boiler (manual-fed) - these require manual supervision while warming

  • Biomass boiler (automatically-fed) - these feed themselves with biomass pellets

  • Condensing boiler - these are far more efficient at using the gas/fuel than non-condensing boilers

Why not speak to a boiler fitter near you about the different options for installation and associated costs?

Installation costs

Obviously, a new boiler won't fit itself - whether it runs on electric, gas, LPG or biomass, you'll need someone to fit it for you.

The time, skill and effort involved from central heating engineers will often vary based on the type of boiler.

For example, gas boilers will need to be installed by someone who is Gas Safe certified. If you are looking at getting a new electric boiler, then an electrician may be more useful.

What to consider with boiler installation costs

We've included a free cost calculator to help you get a rough estimate for a new (or replacement) boiler.

Factors such as location, product, size and energy source have an impact upon cost, so please bear in mind that this tool is only for information and not an accurate quote.

It is a good idea to speak directly to a tradesperson who can provide you with all of the relevant information.

Please note that the cost calculator does not include things like:

  • VAT

  • Relocation of electric or fuel pipes

  • Ventilation

  • Type of tradesperson (i.e. plumber, gas specialist, electrician)

  • Service charges

  • Delivery costs (if applicable)

The calculator is based on numbers from Checkatrade's professional estimators. They are Chartered Members (MRICS) of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Members of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB).
