What jobs can an electrician do?

An electrician is responsible for the safety of electrical equipment, but the scope of their work is fairly broad.

Questions to ask an electrical contractor before you hire them

• What insurance do you have? Trades should have insurance and be willing to share a copy with you

• Are you registered with a Competent Person Scheme? This means they've been assessed to make sure the work is high quality and safe

• Does this work come under Building Regulations? Some electrical work falls under Part P of building regulations. Ask your electrician for more information

• What other guarantees do you offer on your work? Some trades have guarantee periods for their work

• How much do you charge? We recommend getting 2-4 quotes from different electrical contractors. Ask for the quotes to be itemised so you can compare like-for-like. Check whether the quote includes materials and labour, electrical certification, call out fees and making good any areas that are disrupted
