How to get an ECS card: everything you need to know
Have you heard about the Electrical Certification Scheme (ECS) and want to know how to get an ECS card? Or maybe you’re wondering if you need one at all. In this guide, you’ll find out all the information you need.

Whether you’re an electrical apprentice, qualified electrician or project manager, holding an ECS card can be very handy.
We’ll talk you through the different card types, how to apply for an ECS card, and the benefits of being an ECS card holder. So, let’s get started…
What is an ECS Card?
An ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) card is issued to electricians and tradespeople in the UK who are carrying out or supporting electrical work in the UK.
As an ECS card holder, your card is proof of your electrical qualifications, skills, and experience.
Holding an ECS shows that you meet the required industry standards to work safely and competently on electrical installations.
It’s similar to a CSCS card used in the construction industry, only it’s specific to the electrotechnical industry.

Types of ECS cards
There are various types of ECS cards depending on your exact role, qualifications and level of experience with electrical work.
The different cards make it easier for employers and site managers to verify the skills and competence of each worker.
Here are some of the most common types of ECS cards in the UK:
Apprentice Card – For tradespeople currently enrolled in an approved apprenticeship in the electrotechnical industry
Trainee Electrician Card – For anyone training or studying to become a qualified electrician (but with no formal qualifications yet)
Installation Electrician Card – For fully qualified electricians with an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation
Approved Electrician Card – For qualified electricians with additional advanced qualifications and more experience
Electrical Labourer Card – For workers who work alongside qualified electricians but aren’t yet fully trained or qualified themselves
Site Support Operative Card – For non-technical workers who provide support services on-site, e.g. logistics or handling materials
Manager Card – For project managers and site supervisors in managerial roles within the electrotechnical industry
