What do electricians do?

An electrician is responsible for the safety of electrical equipment, but the scope of their work is fairly broad.

If you require any of the following jobs and are looking at tradespeople that work in your area, it's a licensed electrician that you need:

Finding and booking a licensed electrician means that you can be assured of their commitment to high quality work. But hiring an electrician with a license also means they can provide their qualifications and experience.

How to find an electrician or electrical contractor who cover your local area

Now you know what questions to ask, it's time to find a qualified, licensed, and local electrician you can rely on. Here's how:

Check the national trade associations

Membership or accreditation with trade associations such as ECA, NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA will provide reassurance that you're dealing with a trusted, qualified electrician.

You can also use trade directories such as Checkatrade to find approved and licensed electricians near you.

Check online reviews

The internet makes it very easy to check a tradesperson's reputation and the quality of their work.

Websites such as Checkatrade display honest and verified reviews from real-life customers.

Ask for recommendations

Local friends and family are a great source of recommendations. Good tradespeople will happily recommend each other, so ask your plumber or carpenter if they know of a good electrician.

Remember, you can check any recommendations you receive on Checkatrade!

Questions to ask an electrical contractor

For something as potentially dangerous as electricity, it's surprising how many homeowners don't check an electrician's credentials or ask some questions before hiring them.

Just asking a handful of qualifying questions could save you a lot of time, money, and hassle further down the line.

What insurance do you have?

If a tradesperson has insurance, then you'll be protected should something go wrong during a job.

Don't be afraid to ask to see an electrician's proof of insurance. If a tradesperson makes this exchange awkward, it could be a sign of a red flag.

All Checkatrade members must have up-to-date public liability insurance to be listed in our directory.

Are you registered with a Competent Person Scheme?

Reliable, qualified electricians will be registered with a Competent Person Scheme. This means they will have been assessed to ensure the quality of their work.

Does this work come under Building Regulations?

Some electrical work falls under the Part P of Building Regulations and requires certification with an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). This is to ensure all residential electrical work is completed to a safe standard.

If this is the case, make sure you use an electrician registered with a government-approved scheme, as they'll take care of the necessary paperwork and notifications for you.

What other guarantees do you offer on your work?

For additional peace of mind, it's worth noting that the work of Checkatrade members comes with the Checkatrade guarantee, providing extra peace of mind for up to 12 months (T&Cs apply).

Can you show me examples of your work?

Take the time to do your research. Ask to see photos of previous work (if appropriate), and check online reviews.

Any tradesperson who's a Checkatrade member will have a business profile page on our site where you can easily check both of these things.

What's your availability?

Good electricians will be booked up far in advance, so - where possible - start your search early to avoid disappointment.

If you're hiring an electrical contractor to complete part of your renovation works, for example, ask how long the work will take to help with your project management.

How much do you charge?

We recommend getting 2-4 quotes from different electrical contractors near you before making your decision.

Ask for the quotes to be itemised so you can compare like-for-like. Check whether the quote includes:

Electricians tend to charge between £45 - £60per houror £400per day, depending on the type of work involved, the electrician's experience, and their pricing structure.

Rewiring a property will range from around £3,900for a 1-bed flat to £10,000for a 5-bed property.

Looking for a 24 hour electrician near you? Expect to pay in the region of £5,650per hour.
