Is it possible to paint over a water stain?

Yes. As long as you have confirmed that the cause of the stain is fixed, you can definitely paint over a water stain. Before you start, however, you may need to do some preparation.

How to paint over a water stain

For a permanent fix, it’s important to follow these steps for a flawless finish.

  1. Make sure the cause of the water damage has been remedied
  2. Check that the ceiling is completely dry
  3. Repair any damaged plaster or paint by sanding, filling, and re-sanding
  4. Apply an oil-based stain block to the affected area
  5. Leave to dry for approx. ten hours
  6. Apply 1 – 2 coats of emulsion

If you follow these steps, you should get a perfect finish every time. Have a read of our how to guide for more detailed information.

Can I paint over a water stain myself?

Yes. If you are a competent DIYer there’s no reason why you can’t complete this job yourself.

Simply follow the steps above to completely hide a water stain on your ceiling.

Painting and decorating, however, is a physical job. This is especially true of painting a ceiling.

When you want to ensure a quality finish, we recommend hiring an experienced professional.
