How can I fill the gap between the skirting board and the floor?
There’s more than one way to create a sleek, draught-free finish to your flooring.
Here are four of the most common options:
1. Sealant
Bona Gap Master and Osmo Interior Gap Sealer are flexible wood fillers that can be sanded smooth once dry and overcoated with your chosen floor finish.
They’re also available in a range of colours, so you can match them up with the shade of your flooring for a neat and tidy aesthetic.
Steer clear of a silicone caulk for this job. Paint will not adhere to silicone, so it’s best avoided on/around woodwork such as skirting boards as you’ll be unable to touch up the paintwork in the future.
2. Caulk
Some people use a decorator’s caulk to fill the gap between the skirting board and the floor. While it might be less flexible, it can be painted over and is relatively cheap to buy.
3. Scotia
Scotia is a concave-style beading that is fixed to the skirting board to cover the gap.
It’s available in a variety of different finishes to match your flooring. Alternatively, opt for white scotia to give the appearance of it being part of the skirting board.
4. Quadrant beading
Another option is quadrant moulding or beading. This differs from scotia as it’s a convex-style beading (the cross-section is in the form of a quarter circle), which can be painted if desired.
