A neighbour’s garage roof is in need of repair and now damaging ours – what do we do?

If your neighbour doesn’t properly look after their property, it can end up damaging yours. This can make for an awkward conversation, especially if they refuse to pay for repairs.

Here, we’ll look at what happens if a neighbour’s garage roof is in need of repair and now damaging yours.

A neighbour’s garage roof is in need of repair and damaging yours

If your garage is attached to your neighbour’s and you’re experiencing a leak, the problem may be coming from them. Especially if you can tell that your neighbour’s garage roof is in bad condition, while yours is in good nick.

It’s not enough just to patch up the damage caused by the leak as, unless the issue is repaired, the problem could keep reoccurring. So, what do you do?

1. Check the source of the damage

First things first, make sure you’re certain that the damage is being caused by your neighbour’s garage.

Start by getting some reliable roofers near you to take a look at the damage. They’ll be able to get to the source of the issue and confirm where it’s coming from.

2. Talk to your neighbour

If you’re on good terms with your neighbour, see if you can explain the situation to them.

Hopefully, they’ll understand where you’re coming from and will agree to carry out the necessary repairs.

3. Contact your house insurance

If your neighbour refuses to repair their garage roof or makes it impossible to have a conversation with them, don’t panic.

Simply get in touch with your house insurance provider. Usually, they’ll send a surveyor over to assess the damage.

They’ll then be able to take matters into their own hands and, fingers crossed, will resolve the issue for you.

Find a professional roofer to get the ball rolling

If you suspect that your neighbour’s ropey roof is causing damage to your property, don’t hesitate.

Start by getting a professional roofer to come out and assess your roof. They’ll be able to confirm where the damage is coming from. Then, if it turns out that your neighbours are at fault, you’ll have the impetus you need to get things moving.
