Should I replace microbore pipes?
Microbore central heating systems use narrower pipes, typically with a diameter of 10mm or less. If you’re replacing your boiler and/or radiators, should you replace microbore pipes?
There’s no single right answer for this one. If your microbore pipes have been working fine and efficiently heating your home, you don’t necessarily need to replace them.
That said, there are a number of common issues that come with narrow microbore pipes.
Pros and cons of microbore pipes
When speaking to plumbers, there are often differing views on whether microbore pipes are a good or bad idea. Here are some of the pros and cons of microbore pipes…
Pros
- Their flexibility often makes them easier to install in tight spaces
- They generally have faster heat-up times
- They use less water and can lower energy bills
Cons
- Their smaller diameter can lead to reduced flow rates
- Narrower pipes means they can be more prone to blockages
- Microbore systems can be more expensive if you need special or bespoke fittings
Tips for microbore pipes maintenance
Often microbore pipes get the blame when a central heating system has issues. However, it’s not always the pipes themselves that are the problem – it’s often down to poor maintenance and/or poor installation.
To get the best from your microbore pipes:
- Have a filter fitted with your boiler
- If your central heating system is ever drained, make sure the inhibitor is added again
- The system should be flushed out whenever a new boiler is installed
