What is the best lighting for a bathroom?

The best lighting for a bathroom will usually be a combination of overhead lighting and wall lights beside or above the mirror. This will ensure that your bathroom is functional and that it will also have more flattering lighting for tasks such as applying makeup.

The bathroom lights you can choose from include:

  • LED spotlights. A type of overhead lighting, these are great for adding a modern touch to your bathroom. You often get them grouped into a bar or plate.
  • Recessed downlights. These are built into the ceiling to create a slick and seamless finish. You can choose between fixed or tilted.
  • Bathroom ceiling lights. Usually, bathroom ceiling lights are simple and fitted flush to the ceiling. However, they don’t have to be – you could even go so far as to add a chandelier!
  • Bathroom wall lights. These are great for adding both practicality and ambience to your bathroom. Usually, they’re fitted beside or over a mirror – you can choose from a range of designs and from both single and double fittings.
  • LED bathroom mirrors. Some bathroom mirrors and wall cabinets have LED lights built-in to help you carry out tasks such as shaving or applying makeup. They can also help to create a relaxing ambience, for instance, for a soak in the bath.

Whatever kind of lighting you choose for your bathroom, it’s important to ensure it has the right IP rating for the zone where you’re installing it. A qualified electrician will be able to help ensure it meets all the necessary safety requirements.
