What type of adhesive do I use to dot and dab?

To install either standard or insulated plasterboard, it’s crucial to use the right type of adhesive.

For this type of job, a drywall – or plasterboard – adhesive (otherwise known as Bonding Compound) is required.

This bonds the plasterboard directly to the wall using the ‘dot and dab’ technique.

How much adhesive should you use for dot and dab?

The amount of adhesive needed for dot and dab depends on the type of plasterboard you’re installing.

Heavier, thicker boards will need more than their slimmer counterparts. It’s also recommended to apply more plasterboard adhesive as you go down the wall, as the lower parts of the board will support more weight.

As a general rule, the standard thickness of dot and dab adhesive is around 10mm once compressed between the plasterboard and the substrate.

How do you prep a wall before dot and dab?

It’s crucial to make sure your wall is properly prepped before applying your dot and dab adhesive.

Any moisture from the wall will affect the success of your dry lining, so preparation is key.

  • If you’re plasterboarding a wallpapered wall, the wallpaper must be removed beforehand
  • If using a steamer to do this, make sure the wall is dry before moving on to the next step
  • Once dry, you can apply a PVA/water mix to stop the wall from drawing moisture out of your adhesive

What’s the PVA mix for dot and dab?

The ratio for the dot and dab PVA mix is normally around 5:1, but do check the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • When the wall is completely dry, you can begin your dot and dab application
