What's the best paint for new plaster?

Have you just had a room newly plastered? Are you wondering what type of paint is best to use on your smooth new walls? If this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place.

We're often asked: What's the best paint for new plaster? Many people are nervous about painting freshly plastered walls, having heard horror stories about painting on wet plaster or using the wrong type of paint. But worry not, by following a few basic 'rules' for painting fresh plaster, you'll ensure a top-quality end result to be proud of.

Does new plaster need an undercoat?

Yes. The first coat of paint you apply to a newly plastered wall should always be a diluted mist coat. Create a mist coat by mixing 60% water with 40% matt emulsion in a paint kettle. This will create a sheen layer on the newly plastered wall.

This is an extremely important part of painting a newly plastered wall. Plaster is very absorbent and must be properly primed before applying any top layers, whether you're decorating with paint or wallpaper.

A diluted mist coat of matt emulsion will be partially absorbed into the wall creating a suitable surface for your chosen emulsion or wallpaper.

What's the best paint for new plaster?

Always make your mist coat using a matt emulsion. If you use a vinyl-based paint, a skin will form on the plaster that will cause problems with peeling.

Specialist paints such as Dulux Super Matt are a good choice to create a professional finish. Once you have applied the base coat, another two coats of standard emulsion are preferable.

For the best quality finish, choose a premium quality paint for the top layer whether this is colour or white. Dulux and Valspar are high-quality trade paints that give an excellent finish.

Can I paint plaster myself?

Painting and decorating is often viewed as a simple task for beginner DIYers. You may wish to try your hand at painting your newly plastered walls but ensure that you use the correct mix for the mist coat to avoid future problems. It's also incredibly important to make sure the plaster is completely dry before applying the mist coat to the wall.

For a professional finish that'll save you time and hassle, we recommend hiring an experienced painter and decorator.
