What’s the best way to repoint a patio?

Question: My patio needs repointing in some sections. What is the most economical and lasting way to remedy this problem? I Will wait to do work in Springtime.

Professional estimator

Rake out the existing mortar, taking care not to damage the slabs. There are two options for repointing.

1) Mortar option: 3 parts sand, 1 part cement, mix with water to a paste consistency. Apply to the patio area joints with a gauging trowel, ensuring the joints are full then using the round end of the trowel with pressure, smooth the joints, cleaning off any overspill as you go to avoid staining the slabs. Leave to dry for a couple of hours, then with a soft brush clean off any loose mortar. Leave for a couple of days before walking on or placing any furniture on the patio.

2) Tub jointing compounds, mix as per the tub instruction. Apply as per the mortar option above.

If you aren’t experienced then I would strongly advise getting in a professional to repoint your patio.
