Car service cost

Car servicing isn’t just about ticking a box for your logbook - it’s how you keep your vehicle running smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Whether it’s your annual service or a quick interim check, getting your car serviced regularly can help catch issues early and save money down the line.

What happens when my car is serviced?

That depends on the type of service your car is getting. In the UK, most garages offer three levels:

  • Interim service (every six months or 6,000 miles): Includes oil and filter change, top-ups of essential fluids, and basic safety checks.

  • Full service (once a year or 12,000 miles): A more detailed check including brakes, suspension, lights, steering, and more.

  • Major service (every two years or 24,000 miles): Includes everything in a full service plus extra checks like brake fluid replacement or cabin filter change.

During a service, the mechanic will also check for wear and tear, look for leaks, test your battery, and ensure your tyres, lights, and wipers are road-legal. You’ll get a report of any issues spotted and advice on what might need doing soon.

When should I get my car serviced?

As a rule of thumb in the UK:

  • Every 12 months or every 12,000 miles - whichever comes first - for a full service.

  • Every 6 months or 6,000 miles if you’re doing high mileage, or want peace of mind in between.

  • Before an MOT - some people book a service beforehand to catch problems early and avoid a fail.

Check your vehicle handbook for manufacturer recommendations too - newer cars may have onboard systems that alert you when a service is due.

How much does car servicing cost?

According to our figures, the average cost for a service is £170 for a small car, £210 for a medium car, or £395 for a large car.

The exact price you pay will depend on a number of factors, including any work that needs doing to your car as a result of the service.
