Penny floor cost guide

If you’re a fan of social media, you may well have seen some of the viral videos showing penny floors or penny table tops. Using your spare pennies can be a great way to create a striking floor in your home. But how much does a penny floor cost?

If you’re a fan of social media, you may well have seen some of the viral videos showing penny floors or penny table tops. Using your spare pennies can be a great way to create a striking floor in your home. But how much does a penny floor cost?

It is possible to create a penny floor yourself, if you’re an experienced DIY enthusiast. But if you want to guarantee a professional finish without the hassle, we recommend hiring a resin flooring specialist to do the job.

The cost of a penny floor will vary, but on average you’re looking at a cost in the region of £20 to £150 for an epoxy resin floor. The main factors that will affect the penny floor cost per square foot are the size of the floor area, the type of resin used, and any preparation work needed to get your existing flooring in condition for pouring. As well as this, remember that it’s cheaper to use coppers than it is silver coins. A copper penny floor cost will be significantly lower than a silver penny floor.

If you’re going to use coppers (which are the most popular choice) then you’ll need to factor in the dimensions of the coins to plan the flooring:

  • Diameter of a 1p = 20.3mm
  • Diameter of a 2p = 25.9mm

Pros and cons of a penny floorPenny floor cost per square foot

Pros

  • Durable. A penny floor uses a poured resin to achieve the finished result, which is an extremely tough and durable material.
  • Visually striking. There’s no denying that a penny floor creates an instant impact and you can even get creative with the way you lay the coins to create patterns.
  • Unique. Although penny floors have gone viral on Instagram, they’re still few and far between in reality – so installing one will definitely make your floor stand out from the crowd.

Cons

  • Labour intensive. The process of preparing the floor, meticulously placing the coins and pouring the multiple layers of resin take time. The finished result is impressive, but you’ll need the patience to get you there. If you don’t have that, get a professional in.
  • Removal. Laying a penny floor is cool, but taking it up can be a pain in the neck. If you think you’re going to want to change your flooring in the future, a penny floor could give you a headache down the line.

How to make a penny floor

Top tip: If you want your coppers to be sparkling, soak them in cola or vinegar overnight and with a bit of a scrub they’ll come up spotless.

  1. Preparation is key. Make sure your existing floor is in good condition to add pennies and resin, and make sure you have enough pennies to cover the whole floor area.
  2. Apply your chosen adhesive and start laying pennies, making sure you’ve measured out the floor area and planned how the coins will sit.
  3. Once all pennies are laid and the adhesive has set, add grouting to the whole floor (cleaning off any excess grouting from on top of the coins.
  4. After the grouting has dried, it’s time to add the epoxy resin coating. This part is best left to the professional, so you get a perfectly smooth finish.

  • Get professional help for the resin flooring. It can be tricky to prepare the resin and pour it evenly, so leave this step to the professionals.
  • Shop around. Ask multiple resin floor specialists for quotes to make sure you’re being quoted getting fair and competitive penny floor costs.
  • Check their reviews. When hiring a tradesperson. make sure you ask to see examples of their recent work and always check out their ratings and reviews from previous customers.
