A stove rope is a piece of rope that can be attached around the edge of your stove door, glass and sometimes other parts of your stove. Its primary purpose is to seal the door and glass, avoiding additional airflow and keeping as much heat as possible in the body of the stove.

How much does it cost to repair the stove seal?

Because repairing a stove rope is such a quick and easy job, you won’t often find a professional who’ll be willing to come to your house for this alone. The margins are so small that it simply won’t be worth the journey for them. For that reason, you’ll normally have one of three options when it comes to your stove rope repair.

  1. Combine it with a service or larger job: You could ask a professional to carry out your stove rope repair at the same time as your stove is having its annual service or as part of a larger job such as getting your stove glass replaced.
  2. Do it yourself: You can buy a stove rope replacement kit consisting of rope and adhesive for around £12. However, we wouldn’t recommend taking this on unless you are fully confident of the task. To save on costs, you could buy the kit and get an expert in to do it on your behalf.
  3. Bring the door into a store: With most stoves, it’s fairly easy to remove the door. Some stove companies will be happy to carry out your stove rope repair for you if you bring the door into their store.

Average cost to repair stove rope

The cost to repair the stove seal will depend on which of the three routes above you choose. However, if you remove your stove door and bring it to a stove company’s store in person, you can expect to pay around £40 for the repair.

How to repair stove seal

Carrying out a stove rope repair is reasonably straightforward, although it will vary slightly depending on your particular stove and how the rope is positioned.

Some stoves have a groove that the stove rope sits in around the door or glass frame. However, with others, you’ll need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to find out exactly how to position the rope.

Then, it’s a case of removing the old rope and sticking the new one down using adhesive. To make sure that it sticks securely, you can give your stove door a quick rub down with sandpaper first. Then just hold the rope in position until the adhesive has dried. Again, if this isn’t something you’ve done before then we would recommend getting an expert in to do it.

Summary of stove rope repair cost

  • If you notice your stove rope cracking or breaking, it’s a sign that it needs to be replaced.
  • Consider getting your stove rope repaired as part of a larger job or annual service.
  • Some stove companies will carry out a stove repair for you if you remove the door and bring it into their store.
