Tips for how to remove a stuck oven light bulb
When dealing with an oven light bulb, whether it’s broken or simply stuck, here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Always make sure you disconnect the power before doing any work on your oven
- Never do any work on the inside of the oven if it’s hot, always wait for it to cool down completely first
- If broken glass is involved, take extra care and always wear protective gloves
How to remove a broken oven light bulb
In most ovens, the oven light bulb is covered by a glass cover or dome that protects the bulb from damage. However, in some cases the light cover can become loose or broken and the oven light bulb consequently gets broken too.
If you’re confident working with sharp objects and electrical appliances, follow the steps below. If, however, you’re not confident in removing the broken oven light bulb yourself then we always recommend hiring a qualified electrician or oven specialist to do it for you.
Here’s how to remove a broken light bulb from an oven:
- Unplug the oven or shut off the power completely using the electrical breaker/fuse box
- Put on a pair of protective gloves in case you have to handle any broken glass
- Remove the oven light bulb cover (refer to your oven manufacturer’s guide to see exactly how to remove the cover)
- If the oven light bulb glass has broken into pieces, use a vacuum cleaner to remove all broken glass from the light bulb holder
- Using either your hands or pliers, gently remove the broken light bulb from the socket
- Insert the new oven light bulb into the socket and replace the light bulb cover
- Plug the oven back in, or turn on the power at the breaker/fuse box. Job done
How to remove stuck oven light bulb cover
Can’t remove the oven bulb cover? Help is at hand. Here are some tips for helping you remove a stuck oven light bulb cover:
Option 1 – Check for screws
Before you start twisting and yanking the “stuck” oven light bulb cover, use a torch to check that there aren’t small screws that you need to remove first. If there are, grab your screwdriver and remove the screws – the light bulb cover should then come off easily.
Option 2 – Use a lubricant
Try spraying a lubricant around the stuck light bulb cover and let it sit for a few minutes. That can often loosen the cover enough to get it off
Option 3 – Use a non-slip grip
Sometimes it’s simply a matter of grip that’s needed to remove the stuck oven light bulb cover. Put on protective gloves and use a strip of rubber or another non-slip material and gently apply pressure to remove the cover. If the cover breaks when you’re applying pressure take care not to cut yourself on any broken glass.
Option 4 – Break and replace
If you can get hold of a replacement oven light bulb cover then sometimes the easiest solution is to carefully break the existing cover off.
