Garage shelving doesn’t have to be stylish as it is out of sight but it does have to be functional. Unfortunately, the most practical things aren’t always the prettiest and this has to be said for garage storage shelves ideas.
Freestanding racks are a great option if you want to utilise the entire space of your garage from floor to ceiling. These are sold in packs and they have to be built and fixed together. This means you can choose the configuration that works best for your space.
Open shelves
For garage wall shelving, you may want to choose open shelves so you can easily see the items that you are wanting to store. With the nature of open shelving, things can become cluttered very quickly so it’s a good idea to invest in some small containers that can sit neatly on your shelves to make sure things are a bit more organised.
Open shelves don’t have to cost a fortune, rather than buying new ones see if you have any excess wood lying around so you can make your own. This is great for the environment and will give your garage a rustic look.
Wooden garage shelving

Peg boards are a fantastic way of hanging tools or accessories that you may want to keep in a garage. If you have a blank wall to play with we recommend hanging a metal or cork peg board to cover the wall and to maximise the space that’s available.
You can then add mini shelving units and hooks on to the peg board that will allow you to store multiple different items in lots of unique ways.
Grid wall system

Make your own grid wall storage system out of wooden planks to hang your garden tools and accessories on to. All you have to do is secure planks of wood on to the wall (we recommend using wall plugs) and then use nails or hooks as hanging devices.

Hanging storage
If you prefer more of a sleek design then a simple row of wall hooks will allow you to hang tools from it and won’t clutter the entire wall.

To store smaller items such as nails and hooks, we recommend using old jars or containers. You can then either hang these on the wall or store on open shelves.
