If you’re installing cabling in your kitchen, you might be wondering: Do I need to earth metal capping used for cables in a kitchen? Keep reading to find out the answer.
What is metal capping?
Metal cable capping is typically a lightweight galvanised metal covering that is used to carry and protect cables. It’s often used to protect cables while plastering.
So, do I need to earth the metal capping used for cables in a kitchen?
Metal capping doesn’t usually need to be earthed because it isn’t an exposed conductive part of the cabling itself.
As long as the cables you’re using are installed within safe zones and your electrical circuits are protected by a residual current device (RCD), you don’t need any metal capping or conduit at all.
On the other hand, if your cables aren’t protected by an RCD in the system, you’ll need to install them at least 50mm deep. Alternatively, contain them within earthed metal conduit or trunking.
