If you’ve recently fitted a bare MDF structure in your home and you’re ready to paint it, you want to do it in the best way. But, do I need to prime MDF before painting? Keep reading to find out.

Should I prime MDF before painting?

The simple answer is yes. You should always prime MDF before painting it.

MDF is an absorbent material and any paint you apply will become absorbed into the wood. This means that you will use more paint than I necessary.

MDF can be painted without a primer, but you will not get the best end results. The process will also be more time-consuming and cost more in the long run.

What primer should I use for MDF?

The purpose of a primer is to seal the surface ready for applying outer layers of paint. A primer creates a protective layer and partially absorbs into the surface material.

Choosing a purpose MDF primer is the best option. All good paint manufacturers such as Dulux and Crown sell MDF primers.

These are often designed to act as a combination primer and undercoat. They are usually water based and quick drying and can be used in both interior and exterior applications.

Can I prime MDF myself?

Applying a coat of primer to MDF is a relatively straightforward task and can be accomplished by a competent DIYer.

When you want to ensure a fully professional finish, however, it’s best to hire a skilled tradesperson.
