How much Type 1 is needed per square metre of driveway?

When planning a new driveway, you’ll need a layer of sub base material. In the UK, Type 1 is the most popular sub base material for driveways. But how much Type 1 is needed per square metre of driveway?

What is type 1 for a driveway?

There are several types of sub base material available, each is suitable for different uses. Type 1 is a commonly used sub base material and is suitable for a wide range of applications.

Type 1 sub base usually consists of a mixture of rock and stone. It typically provides a stable base layer for driveways (as well as roads and other hard surfaces).

How much Type 1 is needed per square metre of driveway?

You’ll usually need around 250kg of Type 1 sub base per square metre of driveway, based on a depth of 15cm.

To calculate how much Type 1 you need for your whole driveway follow these steps:

  1. Measure the length and width of your driveway area
  2. Work out how many square metres you need to cover
  3. Multiply that number by 250kg

If you’re planning to lay a sub base layer of more than 15cm then you’ll need to adjust the calculations. We wouldn’t recommend laying a sub base layer of less than 15cm for a driveway.

Top tip: Ideally, you need to apply your Type 1 in two layers or 7.5cm and use a vibrating plate to compact each layer as you go.
