Should you pressure wash your roof tiles?
If you’ve noticed a build up of dirt, moss and debris on your roof, you might be tempted to crack out a pressure washer. But should you pressure wash your roof tiles?
The short answer is no. Although it might seem like a good idea, pressure washing roof tiles can actually cause a number of problems for you and your roof.
4 reasons why you shouldn’t pressure wash your roof tiles
Here are some of the reasons why you don’t want to use a pressure washer to clean your roof tiles:
- Leaks into the roof space – There are often small gaps in roof tiles and pressure washing can force water into those gaps. Not only can this cause leaks into the roof space underneath, but it can also cause the gaps and cracks to get bigger
- Reducing the life span of your roof tiles – The power of pressured jet water can remove layers of your roof tiles and cause them to degrade faster. As a result, you’ll then have to replace the tiles sooner
- Loosened or broken tiles – Not only can jet pressure washing reduce the lifespan of roof tiles, but it can also loosen or break them. The force of pressure washing can cause tiles to come loose, break, fall out completely, and/or damage the bonding between tiles
- Validity of your roof warranty – When roofs are installed they often have a manufacturer’s warranty. Those warranties very often exclude the use of high-pressure washers, so if you do pressure wash your roof tiles you could invalidate their warranty
Save yourself the hassle and possible further problems of pressure washing, and hire a local roof cleaning company instead.
